About the Pregnancy Test Date

This calculator tells you when a home pregnancy test is likely to be accurate, based on your ovulation date. Tests can turn positive about 10 days after ovulation, but waiting until the day after your missed period is far more reliable.

Also known as: when to take a pregnancy test, pregnancy test calculator, earliest pregnancy test date, how soon can I test.

Worked example

Dates in this example are worked out as if today were 5 Nov 2026.

Days until the best test day: 15 days (From 20 Nov 2026). For the most reliable result, take a urine test from the day after your missed period, 20 Nov 2026. Sensitive tests can show a positive from about 15 Nov 2026, but a negative that early may be wrong.

Formula and cut-offs

Ovulation = last period + cycle length - 14. Earliest test = ovulation + 10 days. Best test day = day after the period is due. Detection rates by days past ovulation are approximate.

Frequently asked questions

How soon can I take a pregnancy test?

Some sensitive tests can detect pregnancy about 10 days after ovulation, but results are most reliable from the first day of a missed period.

Why is my test negative but my period is late?

You may have tested too early or ovulated later. Retest after 3 days, and see a doctor if your period is more than a week late.

When is the best time of day to test?

First-morning urine has the highest hCG concentration.
